League rules
General provisions
To become a participant of the Internet Indycar League, you must submit an entry in free form on the championship forum, or send it to the championship organizer. In the entry you must state your nickname, which team you will race for, which chassis, engine and tyres you will use, and which country the team represents. It is desirable (but not obligatory) to add where the team's base is located, what sponsors it has and who the owner is.
As a participant of the championship, you may: use any car number and livery for your car; change your car's personal information; edit the car model and the engine sounds; re-run the qualifying and the race any number of times; use any chassis, engine and any tyres available in the game; exchange setups with drivers of your own team only; and use Braking Help, Shifting Help and Spin Recovery if you wish. Moving from one team to another during the season is allowed, but the championship organizer must be notified of it.
As a participant of the championship, you must: use the carsets specified by the organizer; use the tracks specified by the championship organizer; use for the whole season the chassis, engine and tyres declared at the start of the season; run the rounds at the time agreed in the schedule; and use the track configs (***.TXT files) specified by the championship organizer, where they exist.
As a participant of the championship, you are forbidden to: change the characteristics of any car in the carset; change the driver list in the carset; or exchange setups with representatives of other teams.
All races are held in Single Race mode with the set parameters (weather, laps number, AI cars number) determined by the championship organizer. After qualifying, save the replay (*.RPY) of your best lap. Then start the race, correctly save the end-of-race screenshots, and be sure to save the replay of the whole race. Detailed description of running qualifying and the race and sending in the results (results are accepted only via this scheme).
Any participant caught "cheating" will be punished with a penalty or immediately disqualified.
Penalties
*DQ — disqualification.
- Changing the weather parameters: DQ.
- Missing qualifying *.RPY file: DQ in qualifying.
- Missing *.RPY file of the last race lap: DQ in the race.
- Running a round outside the schedule: DQ.
If a driver did not send the result according to the scheme:
- Missing F1 or F2 qualifying screenshots: +10 s / -5.000 mph in qualifying.
- Missing F1 or F2 race screenshots: +1 minute in the race; +1L if the gap to the leader is 1 lap or more.
- Missing qualifying *.stn file: +5 s / -2.500 mph in qualifying.
- Missing race *.stn file: +30 s in the race; +1L if the gap to the leader is 1 lap or more.
- Missing screenshots and *.stn files in both sessions: DQ.
Determining the winner
The main data for determining the qualifying winner is:
- Best lap time (speed for ovals)
Unlike the Champ Car series, we have a single qualifying session.
The main data for determining the race winner are:
- Number of laps completed (a driver is not classified if he has covered less than 80% of the leader's distance in laps; laps not counted as a result of disqualification are taken into account)
- Total race time
The position you took in the game itself has no significance for the championship. But regardless of time, a driver who has completed fewer laps will be placed lower in the final classification than those who completed more laps — try not to get lapped. If several drivers are down by the same number of laps, then on ovals the best is determined by the average lap time, which can be seen by pressing the F1 key. On road courses the best is determined by the qualifying time.
The points system is the same as the one used in the Champ Car series from 2001 to 2003:
| Place | Points |
|---|---|
| 1 | 20 |
| 2 | 16 |
| 3 | 14 |
| 4 | 12 |
| 5 | 10 |
| 6 | 8 |
| 7 | 6 |
| 8 | 5 |
| 9 | 4 |
| 10 | 3 |
| 11 | 2 |
| 12 | 1 |
1 point for pole position.
1 point for the most laps led.
From the fifth IIL championship the League is divided into two cups:

The Road Racing Cup (road-course rounds) and the Speedway Cup (speedways and superspeedways); the cups' rounds alternate in the schedule. After they finish, a Super Final (Super Final) consisting of two rounds is held. Points in the cups are awarded separately for each cup. Anyone who wishes may take part in each cup — and in the Super Final too, but with one condition: in the Super Final only the results of the 4 cup leaders count. That is, everyone else races outside the classification. Those four are the drivers who took 1st and 2nd places in the Road Racing Cup and in the Speedway Cup. If they turn out to be the same drivers, the ones closest to them in the standings are chosen. If one and the same driver took first or second places in both cups, then his "qualifying" result for the final is considered to be the one where he scored the greater number of points. If the points are equal, the number of wins is compared; if the wins are equal, the number of second places is compared (third, fourth and so on). If all race positions are equal, the qualifying positions are compared.
Each cup counts a driver's 4 best rounds (qualifying + race) out of 5! That is, the points for the worst round do not count. If a driver ran only 4 rounds, all of them count; if there are more than 4 (given that the cup has 5 rounds), the worst is dropped. This is done so that racers have the chance to miss one round (for valid reasons) without losing their chances at the title. All Super Final rounds count — but only for the 4 drivers racing in the Super Final classification.
The absolute champion of the League is determined by the number of points scored over the two Super Final rounds. If more than one driver scored the highest number of points, the best is determined by the number of wins in the Super Final; if the number of wins is equal, then by the number of second places (third, fourth and so on); if the race positions are equal, the qualifying positions are compared. If in the Super Final the points and the positions in both races and qualifying sessions are all equal, the winner is determined by the championship organizer. As an option, the positions in the cups may be compared (with both cups taken into account together).
Rules for the DOS version of Indycar Racing II
Qualifying
Before starting the game, carefully set the specified game settings (yellow flags, opponent strength and so on).
Start qualifying. Once you finish qualifying, do not rush to move on to the next session — do the following:
- press F1 while in the cockpit (the pop-up corresponding to the key should appear), then press 'PrintScreen' three times.
- press F2 while in the cockpit (the pop-up corresponding to the key should appear), then press 'PrintScreen' three times.
Why 3 times? Because sometimes the first screenshots do not save properly. Then go into the Replay menu, save the replay, cut your best lap out of the replay with the "scissors" tool and save it under the name "QUAL". Then go into the Standings menu. When leaving that menu (ESC key) you will be offered to save the statistics. Choose 'SAVE' and save the file under the name 'QUAL'. That's it — you have saved all the files needed for qualifying. Now exit the race; when leaving the race menu you will be offered to save the race — be sure to save it (choosing YES). Exit the game. In the game directory you will see the created image files 'ICR01.PCX', 'ICR02.pcx' and 'ICR03.PCX'... Move them (you can weed out duplicates) into the directory where the results of your Grand Prix will be kept. Do not change the file names! Then, in the directory of the track where qualifying is held (for example, the track in Australia is in the directory ..\TRACKS\AUSTRAL), you will see the files "Qual.stn" and "Qual.rpy". Move them into your directory. That's it. Now you are ready for the race.
Race
Load the saved game (click the corresponding track and choose the Previous Race item to load the saved game). Before starting the race, do not forget to answer nature's call :D. Start the race. If you need to pit, be careful — do not exceed the pit-lane speed limit. For this you can use the Auto-Brakes, which are toggled on and off by pressing Alt+B. Do not forget to switch them off after leaving the pit lane! On the last lap of the race you need to do several things.
Keep a finger on the 'P' key (pause). As soon as you cross the finish line, press it immediately! Then:
- press F1 while in the cockpit (the pop-up corresponding to the key should appear), then press 'PrintScreen' three times.
- press F2 while in the cockpit (the pop-up corresponding to the key should appear), then press 'PrintScreen' three times.
Attention! Both screenshots must be taken at the same moment. The Pit Board (the black sign in the top-left corner) shown every time you cross the start/finish line must be present. Without it the screenshots are not accepted. Then exit to the race menu and go into the Replay menu. Save the replay of the whole race. Cut the last lap out of the replay and save it under the name LAST. Then finish the race (you should see the picture where you cross the finish line or are carried off by the tow truck) and ONLY THEN go into the Standings menu. If you save the statistics earlier, they will be saved incomplete (for example, the number of laps led will be missing). Save the statistics (Standings) under the name "RACE". That's it, you have saved everything needed. In the root directory find the *.PCX files; do not rename them. Move them into your results directory (be careful — the screenshot names for the race and qualifying may coincide; you can keep the qualifying and race results in separate directories). In the directory containing the track you will find the files "Race.stn", "Last.rpy" and "First.rpy" — move them into the results directory. That's it, the files are ready to be sent. If you retired from the race, send the F1 screenshot (see point a) ), then, while in the cockpit, press "A" — this is the accelerated race mode; wait for the race to end and at the end save the race statistics under the name "Race".
Rules for the Windows version of Indycar Racing II
Qualifying
Before starting the game, carefully set the specified game settings (yellow flags, opponent strength and so on). Start qualifying. Once you finish qualifying, do not rush to move on to the next session — do the following:
Go into the Replay menu, save the replay, place the start and end markers of the replay so that they cover your best lap, then save that part under the name "QUAL".
Then go into the Standings menu. Choose 'File', 'Save as' and save the statistics under the name "QUAL"; a qual.stn file will be created — in the Windows version you can choose where to save the files.
Return to the cockpit, bring up the pit board with the F1 key and take a screenshot by pressing 'PrintScreen'. You have put the screenshot on the clipboard; now launch any graphics program (Paint, Photoshop...) without leaving the game (ALT+TAB), paste the screenshot and save it under the name "QUALF1". Now return to the cockpit and press F2, then take a screenshot and name it "QUALF2".
That's it. You have saved all the files needed for qualifying. Now exit qualifying and be sure to save it (File — Save As). If you wish, you can exit the game and move the screenshots, the statistics and the best-lap replay into the directory where your results are kept. That's it. Now you are ready for the race.
Race
Load the saved game (File — Load). Before starting the race, do not forget to answer nature's call :) and make sure you are ready. Start the race. On the last lap of the race you need to do several things. Keep a finger on the 'P' key (pause). As soon as you cross the finish line, press it (the key) immediately! Then:
- press "F1" and then 'PrintScreen', then, as described above for qualifying, save the screenshot under the name "RACEF1"
- press "F2" and then 'PrintScreen', then save the screenshot under the name "RACEF2"
Saving the race statistics is not obligatory for the Windows version. Attention! The screenshots (F1, F2) must be taken at the same moment. The Pit Board (the sign in the top-left corner) shown every time you cross the start/finish line must be present. Without it the screenshots are not accepted. Then exit to the race menu and go into the Replay menu. Save the replay of the whole race.
Cut the last lap out of the replay and save it under the name LAST. Now finish the race; after you are shown the race-finish picture, you will see the race statistics. They cannot be saved in text form, so save a screenshot of them under the name 'RACEFIN'. If you finished in a low position, you may not be visible in these statistics at first — scroll the statistics so that your result is visible in the centre. That's it, you have saved everything needed.
If you retired from the race, send the F1 screenshot (see point a) ), then, while in the cockpit, press "A" — this is the accelerated race mode; wait for the race to end and at the end save the race statistics under the name "RACEFIN".
Sending in the results
It is desirable to name the archive after your nickname.
Files to send:
- Qualifying (qual.stn — DOS version only)
- Race (race.stn)
- F1 screenshot in the race
- F2 screenshot in the race
- F1 screenshot in qualifying
- F2 screenshot in qualifying
- Last lap of the race (last.rpy)
- Qualifying lap (qual.rpy)
- Screenshot of the race statistics (Windows version only)
Pack the listed files (preferably so that the archive is no larger than 1 MB, and ideally no larger than 500 KB) and send them to the championship organizer at iil@openwheels.org; the archive must be named after the nickname you use in the League. The message subject must contain ICR2, otherwise the result may not be accepted. Alternatively, there used to be a more convenient option — sending the result via the results upload page (the organizer would send you the password on first request, with your League nickname as the login). You are allowed to run the race several times and send the results accordingly, but it is always the last result that counts, not the best one!
Do not rename the files! Do not send the race *.RPY files!
Send them only at the championship organizer's request.
Keep all replays (*.RPY) until the next race.
