Running the Rendition version
The Rendition build of ICR2 is the best-looking version of the game — the one that originally required a Rendition Vérité 3D card. Today it runs on any modern PC through a Rendition wrapper. This guide follows the excellent tutorial by Golden Era Sim Racing.
This is a modern way to play — it wasn't available while the league was running in 2003–2007, when we launched the DOS game directly.
1. Download & install Rendition ICR2
Rendition requires a special version of Indycar Racing II. Download the ICR2REND package (basic game with Rendition updates) — or find and download the original Rendition version of the game elsewhere — and unzip the ICR2REND folder to a short path, e.g. C:\ICR2REND or C:\DOS\ICR2REND.
2. Get the Rendition wrapper
Two options:
- Free wrapper — links are collected in this icr2.net forum thread.
- Microsoft Store version — Rendition Wrapper (RLauncher), paid, with a convenient launcher app.
After installing, launch the app (e.g. RLauncher.exe on your Desktop).
3. Configure DOS settings
- In RLauncher open the DOS Apps tab and click Select folder to install to.
- Select the directory from step 1 (
C:\ICR2RENDetc.). - Click DosBox-Rendition Settings to open the DOSBox config. At minimum adjust the joystick section: under
[joystick]setjoysticktype=2axisif you have two controllers (wheel + pedals), or4axis/4axis_2for a single controller. Consider removing the deadzone. DOSBox sees at most TWO controllers — HidHide can hide extra ones and JoyToKey can bind buttons on other devices. - At the bottom of the file, add under
[autoexec](adjust the mount path to where your ICR2REND folder lives — forC:\ICR2RENDmountc:\, forC:\DOS\ICR2RENDmountc:\DOS):
mount c c:\DOS c: cd ICR2REND set SPEEDY3D=C:\ICR2REND set SPEEDY3D_DMA=1 set SPEEDY3D_MEMSIZE=16 if exist INDYCAR.DMP del INDYCAR.DMP INDYCAR > INDYCAR.DMP
Save and close the config file.
4. Configure Rendition settings
In RLauncher open Rendition Settings and set the options. Adjust Monitor Aspect Ratio to your screen (e.g. 21:9 for ultrawide), otherwise ICR2 will look squashed. Frame Generation and Vsync are optional. Click OK, then Launch on the DOS Apps tab. Enjoy!
