How to install carsets, tracks, effects and sound

← About the game

Installing carsets

Unpack the carset archive. For installation you need the *.dat files (the car models) and drivers2.txt (the list of driver parameters). All carsets must live in the ...\CARS\ directory; the game's original carset, loaded by default, is in the ...\CARS\CARS95 directory. If you want to use only one carset, you can simply rename the *.dat file to cars95.dat and copy it, together with drivers2.txt, into the ...\CARS\CARS95 directory over the originals. If you want to use several carsets at once, create a directory for your carset inside ...\CARS\ — let's call it CARS2003. Then copy the *.dat file of the carset we need and drivers2.txt into the newly created directory. Note! The names (not the extensions) of the directory and the *.dat file must match! In our case, if the directory is called CARS2003, the file with the models must be called cars2003.dat. Now, in the game's Drivers Info menu there is a Car Sets item — click it and choose the carset you need. Done.

Installing tracks

Copy the track folder into the game's TRACKS folder. Done. If you download tracks from other sites, make sure the names of the track folder and the track's *.dat file match.

Installing effects

Unpack dust.zip and smoke.zip into the EFFECTS directory. Then run the corresponding *.bat files of the effects and the effects will be installed.

Installing patch 1.0.2

Copy the patch into the game folder and run it — it will unpack itself. Then run patchicr.bat. The previously unpacked files are no longer needed. Note! The patch installs only over the original game. The carset file cars95.dat must be original, otherwise the patch will not install.

Alex Shegera's recommendations for installing the Windows patch

Install patch 1.0.2 first (it will not install without it). All steps are performed on drive C:

  1. Create the folder C:\SIERRA\ICR2.
  2. Temporarily move the game into this folder.
  3. Create the folder C:\DOS2WIN and copy the downloaded patch into it, then run it.
  4. After the patch unpacks, run INSTALL.BAT, then SETUP.EXE.

In the installer:

  1. Click the INSTALL button straight away.
  2. To the question "Setup needs test your system..." answer NO.
  3. In the window that opens with your computer's parameters, answer YES.
  4. To the question of whether the game is patched to version 1.02 — YES.
  5. To the question of whether the game is located in C:\SIERRA\ICR2 — YES.
  6. Then ignore the game registration.
  7. After the congratulatory :) message about the installation being finished, check that Windows is set to 16-bit colour depth.
  8. That's it — game icons appear in the Start menu.

Note: to run PAINTKIT you need 256 colours only.

Not everyone manages to install the patch exactly this way. There is one more variant, sent in by TILL13:

  1. So, the game folder is c:\sierra\icr2 (it does not have to be exactly that).
  2. Unpack the patch into a dos2win folder (does not have to be exactly that either).
  3. Run the file Install.bat.
  4. A multitude of files and two folders will be unpacked; we only need the ICR2 folder — move its contents into the game directory (c:\sierra\icr2).

Installing the improved sound

Unpack the iilsound.exe archive into the game's SOUND folder. Run iilsound.bat — that's it, the sound is installed. The program patches sound.dat; the original is not deleted but is kept in the same folder under the name sound.org.
